How does FTP work?

FTP works very similarly to the way web pages work. Each file on an FTP server is given an address (URL) so that other computers connected to the internet can find it. Users can then either use an FTP client or most web browsers to either download or upload files to the server.
Here are a couple common scenarios where FTP would be used:
bulletYou've discovered that the latest version of Netscape Communicator has been released and can be found on Netscape's website. You navigate to the site and find the page where you can download the new program. You click on the link to download the newest version. So where does FTP come in , you ask? Most browsers let you download via FTP. Because you are downloading a file (one that you don't need to see before you download since it is very large) your web browser finds the FTP address and downloads the program.

bulletYou have created a web site for your class, and you have seventy-five web pages that you want to place on the Distance Ed server at AVC. Instead of copying all of the files to floppy disks and driving to the college to manually place the files on the server, you could open an FTP client, find the AVC server, navigate to the directory where you need to place the files, and then upload the files.
