What is a bookmark?
One very handy feature of web browsers is their ability to store certain
URLs in a bookmark file. Both Netscape and Internet Explorer offer a bookmark feature in the menubars of the program.
The bookmark feature allows the user to access commonly visited web pages by choosing the URL from the pull-down
menu. This feature also allows the user to add webpage URLs to the bookmark file as well.
For example, if you wanted the convenience of bookmarking the main page of
this website, you would merely need to visit the first page, and, while that page was on the screen, click on the
Bookmark icon in the menubar (in Internet Explorer the bookmark function is called Favorites) and
then choose add Bookmark. Then, whenever you opened your web browser, instead of typing the URL into the
location bar, you could simply click on the Bookmark icon and then choose the main page from the bookmark list.
Most bookmark files also allow the user to set up directories or folders within
the bookmark file so that the bookmarks can be organized to suit the user.
