What is hypertext?
Aside from being the first term in HTML (hypertext markup language), hypertext
more generally means the text used in web documents. Even more particularly hypertext has come to describe the
links used to connect one web page with another. These links are usually colored, underlined text. You can see
an example of hypertext links at the left of this page. You can move to another web page by clicking once on these
links.
Probably the most unique feature of hypertext links is that they allow a web
page designer the opportunity to create documents that can be explored nonlinearly. In other words, whereas textbooks
and other forms of traditional printing lend themselves to be read from the beginning to end in a straightforward,
linear fashion, hypertext links allow the user to explore the linked documents in any order which suits his or
her curiosity.
