About Online Learning
I have developed several courses that are taught in a distance
learning format (i.e., using information technology such as the Internet and
email). Some courses are taught completely online while other courses are
"hybrids." That is, the hybrid course is taught on campus with
portions of the course taught online (e.g., researching topics and posting your
findings to a discussion board).
Taking a distance learning course can be just as
rigorous as taking an on campus course. Perhaps more so. Students taking
distance learning courses must have a great deal of self-discipline to complete
the required assignments within the allotted time. I have been teaching
online classes for several years now and the most often-cited reason as to why
students drop online (distance learning) classes is that the students fall
behind in their work and are unable to "catch up" to the class. Don't
let this happen to you!
We learn best by doing. Therefore, all my courses are
designed to use theory and application.
Below are descriptions of the courses that I
teach for Antelope Valley College.

BUS 212 Women in Organizations
(Internet - Spring and Fall)
*******************************************
Course Description:
This
transfer-level course is designed to identify and compare
differences in gender communication in an organizational
setting and raise awareness of the differences in both
genders to improve interaction between genders in business
settings. Special emphasis is placed on how gender impacts
the outlook regarding work in organizations, the
differences in work/life prioritization, and evaluation of
work performance based on gender-specific criteria. The
course will evaluate the role of women in such areas as
enhanced employee relations, goal setting, networking,
competing, sexism, mentoring, and career leadership
planning.

BUS212-online
sections
of Women in Organizations will be taught completely online. No
on-campus sessions are required; however, the course is structured so that
students must complete the material within a specific timeframe, generally
within one week for an assignment. The following information is being
provided so that you can determine if this type of online learning is for
you.
1) A semester-long work team project is required and counts for a
substantial portion of the student's overall grade. While it is recommended that
students meet in person on campus to work on the project, student teams have
been successful working on the project using e-mail and discussion boards,
exclusively. 2) Participation in the weekly online discussions is
required; due dates for participation are set in advance. For each
discussion, students are required to participate on two separate days during
the assigned week. Weekly online discussions are conducted in an
asynchronous manner (same place, different times). 3) Good reading and
writing skills are especially important in an online classroom.
College-level writing is expected; there are a number of writing assignments
throughout the course. 4) If you enjoy challenges, new
experiences, and working with others, then this is the class
for you. If
you
honestly
do not
like
new
experiences
or do
not
wish
to
work
with
others
in a
team
environment,
then
this
class
is NOT
for
you. An online class is similar to an on-campus class in
that students must purchase textbooks, submit weekly assignments, which include responding to exercises and writing short papers,
participate in weekly discussions (via an asynchronous discussion board),
take exams, and work together on a project.
Exams are administered online and consist of multiple choice and essay.
Weekly assignments may include discussions, case analyses, and experiential
exercises to assist the students in understanding the material and developing
skills. A work team project is required and counts toward a substantial part of
your course grade.
Detailed syllabus and assignments pages are posted to the class Web site and
are available as of the first day of class. Here students see all that is
required, along with the due dates.
Below you will find the Syllabus and Online Learning Notes for the course. References to the main course menu, discussion forum, and Weekly Lessons deal with our Blackboard course site itself. Read the document to understand what is required in this online course.
