Getting Started with AVC Online

Welcome to AVC Online!

Below you will find information that may help you get started with your online class. You may want to print these instructions so you can easily refer to the information as you proceed. First things first…what to do if you need help.

There are two types of help available: Blackboard Help and myAVC Help.

Blackboard Help:

If at any time you need help with using Blackboard, or accessing the Blackboard classroom, DO NOT call AVC's help desk. Contact the Blackboard Support Center. Blackboard staff are available by telephone, email, instant messaging, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and have a knowledge base with lots of answers on their Web site.

myAVC Help:

If you have any questions about myAVC, please refer to the help screens on AVC's Web site or contact the myAVC technical support line at 661-722-6300, extension 6605. NOTE: myAVC requires that pop-ups be allowed. See below for information on how to allow pop-up windows for a specific Web site.

Helpful Browser Settings

AVC uses Blackboard as the online course management system. Just a few preliminary steps may be necessary prior to entering your class. These include issues with popup blockers, browser settings, and plugins.

NOTE: The step-by-step information below is for the Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox Web browsers, which seem to work best with Blackboard. If you use a different browser and encounter difficulties, please check with Blackboard's Support Center.

All Web Browsers: Turn off popup blockers OR add "allowed sites" listed below to your settings.

Add the following "Allowed Sites” in either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox:

  • avc.blackboard.com
  • myavc.avc.edu
  • mymail.avc.edu
  • www.avc.edu

For Internet Explorer: Go to Tools>Pop-Up Blocker>Pop-Up Blocker Settings.

Click here for a short animation on how to allow Pop-ups in Internet Explorer.

For Mozilla Firefox: Go to Tools>Options>Content Next to “Block pop-up windows,” select “Exceptions”

Click here for a short animation on how to allow Pop-ups in Firefox.

Inside Blackboard

Once in the initial screen, review what is on this screen by going through each section. *****Explore all the elements under the My Institution tab FIRST.*****

Edit Personal Information:

In the My Institution screen, under the Welcome, (your name), click on the Personal Information link. Specific instructions for these links include the following:

Notice that some sections are already filled out and cannot be changed. Complete any information you wish to share with the AVC Blackboard community.

Change Password

You are unable to change your password. Your myAVC password must be used to access our Blackboard classroom. To change your myAVC password, login to myAVC.

Set CD-ROM Drive

If your textbook comes with a CD, here is where you would set the drive to your own drive on your personal computer.

Set Privacy Options

*****VERY IMPORTANT***** Blackboard has an OPT-IN feature for the User Directory. Setting these options ON is entirely YOUR CHOICE. Note that the User Directory includes ALL AVC Blackboard participants; this User Directory is NOT the class roster.

Set Visual Text Box Editor Options

Within each class, Blackboard has a text box that resembles a word processor, complete with formatting and editing functions. Set this option as "Available" if you wish to use it.

Set Language Pack

This setting affects the Blackboard system’s instructions and commands. The default is English.

Now you are ready to access all the elements under the Courses tab. Find your course and click on the link to enter. Your course link can be found on either the My Institutions tab or the Courses tab. Once you enter your class, begin your journey by reading the Announcements.
