Application (typically 5% of the exam) 1. A wood splinter lodged in the epidermis will sooner of later dislodge itself without attention whereas one in the dermis will not. Explain the basis for these facts. The cells in the five layers of the epidermis are constantly moving to the surface, replacing those being rubbed off daily. Thus, anything embedded in the epidermis will eventually be carried along and dislodged at the outer surface. Foreign material in the dermis remains there for life because the connective tissue does not move to the surface.
*NOTE: THE USE OF THE WORD "PROTECTION" ALONE, WITHOUT SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO WHAT THREAT THE PROTECTION IS DIRECTED, IS INSUFFICIENT AS A STATEMENT OF FUNCTION. NEVER USE THE WORD" PROTECTION" ALON. , IT IS TOO VAGUE. Please understand that this "Sample Exam" is just a snapshot of the real deal which will have many more questions, totalling 50 points.
