November 29, 2014 Glen Helen Regional Park (48 Species)

Weather:  Fair; 50F to 60F; wind ENE 2 mph.

Time: 0750-1100 hrs.

Area Covered: I walked the perimeter of the park, excluding the sw section which had a locked gate. I also covered the central riparian and pine woodland. Two birders were sitting in folding chairs on the hill overlooking the riparian patch and pine woods; one of them, Bill Hopson, had found and photographed a Brown Thrasher in this area yesterday. There was no sign of this vagrant thrasher found today. I chatted with these two birders for about 20 minutes before completing my survey in the northern section of the park. During that time an unusual white-morph Varied Thrush appeared briefly for photos. About 50 fishermen were around the main lake and pond; conditions were generally good for identifying bird vocalizations.

Birds of seasonal and/or distributional interest found today included, Hooded Merganser (2 -cont.), Cassin's Kingbird (1 -  about one mile north of the park), Varied Thrush (1), Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (3) and Pine Siskin (4).

October 31, 2014  Glen Helen Regional Park (52 Species)

Weather: foggy to partly cloudy with intermittent drizzle;55F. winds WNW 2 mph.

Time: 0757- 1017 hrs.

Area Covered: I walked the northeastern fence line, southward through parkland habitat to the main lake, fishing pond, riparian patch and entrance to the water park.  A crowd of at least 150 people were fishing around the lake and pond. The remainder of the park was largely vacant and quiet. A locked gate prevented me from surveying the southwestern portion of the park (i.e. hillside chaparral and a patch of mature eucalytptus adjacent to a large grassy field). Comparatively few migrant warblers were found today in the park.

Birds of seasonal and/or distributional interest found today included, American Wigeon (1), White-breasted Nuthatch (1), Black-throated Gray Warbler (1), Clay-colored Sparrow (1) and Lawrence's Goldfinch (2).

October 5, 2014 Glen Helen Regional Park (57 Species)

Weather: Fair;70F to 96F; wind WSW, decreasing 10 - 2 mph.

Time: 0747-1114 hrs.

Area Covered: I walked from the northeast entrance (Gate #2) on Glen Helen Parkway, southward to the island between the main lake and fishing pond. Continuing south, I surveyed the scout camping field and adjacent chaparral slopes bordered by a grove of mature eucalyptus. Returning north to the entrance, I surveyed the waterpark entrance, followed by a return to the riparian patch draining into the fishing pond. Dave Goodward and three other birders from the SBCO Audubon Society were also birding GHP this morning; we met briefly to compare notes at the riparian patch, which was one of the birding hotspots in the park. Dave's group reported bird species in GHP that I did not encounter this morning, including,Cooper's Hawk, Barn Owl, Lewis' Woodpecker and Warbling Vireo. There were relatively few visitors in the park during the survey. Maintenance crews were preparing for an evening music event featuring Band Perry.

Birds of seasonal and distributional interest found today included, Red-naped Sapsucker (1), Willow Flycatcher (1), Ruby-crowned Kinglet (3), Fox Sparrow (1), Dark-eyed Junco (2), American Goldfinch (1) and Lawrence's Goldfinch (3).

September 12, 2014 Glen Helen Regional Park (55 Species)

Weather: Fair;  76F to 90F; wind WSW 2 mph.

Time: 0720- 1013 hrs.

Area Covered: I walked the perimeter of the park beginning at the northeast entrance gate (gate #2) and continuing south to the main lake and adjacent pond. This section of the park contains mowed lawns with scattered mature sycamore, alder, pine and other tree species. A ruderal strip along the fence line attracted numerous sparrows and finches. A maintenance crew was operating noisy riding mowers and a weed trimmer around the main lake. Beyond this area was a quiet riparian woodland (young willows) bordered by a patch of tall maple and redwood trees bordering the pond on the south and west sides. Continuing southward on a roadway, I observed birds in a large grassy field (Scout camping area) bordering the Sam Manuel Amphitheater complex. West of this feature, between this road and adjacent hillside chaparral (extensive and largely undisturbed), a patch of tall eucalyptus attracted numerous migrants. Returning northward along the west border, I spent about 30 minutes observing birds in both parkland and riparian habitat in a relatively quiet section of the park. Aside from maintenance crews and a few fishermen around the lake and pond, there was little human presence this morning.

Birdlife was fairly evenly distributed throughout. The well-watered, heterogeneous habitat of this 1,300 acre county park, combined with its geographical position at about 2,000 ft. elevation and between two mountain ranges (San Gabriel Mts.to the west and San Bernardino Mts. to the east, forming the Cajon Pass) makes this location one of the premier birding sites of interior Southern California, particularly during migration.

September 5, 2014  Glen Helen Regional Park (35 Species)

Weather: Fair; 67F to 74F.

Time: 0740-0938 hrs.

Area Covered: I walked into the park from the gated entrance #2 on Glen Helen Parkway, proceeding south to the main lake and pond. The 1,300 acre park includes about 100 acres of mowed lawns and mature native and non-native trees (eucalyptus, pine, alder, willow, sycamore and birch), many attaining more than 75 ft. in height. An artificial  lake in the southeast section is bordered by lawns and is without a shoreline. A smaller body of water (i.e. pond) contained a large patch of cattail marsh and a small outlet stream. Prior to 0900 hrs. there were only workers and myself in the park; generator trailers connected to lights were operating throughout the park, creating a constant drone of background noise. At 0900 hrs. park officials began allowing car-campers into the western section where cars and people were searched by sheriff and correctional department deputies, together with drug-sniffing dogs. A "rave" event had been scheduled for the weekend. By 0930 hours dozens of law enforcement officers (SBCO Sheriff and CHP) were on the scene; local access roads blocked by cones and stop signs. Parking was available in lot #5 across the street from the entrance gate on Glen Helen Parkway ($10 per vehicle; $2 pedestrians). Normal Glen Helen park hours (i.e. except for special events and fishing derby preparations) are 0730-1700 hrs., 7 days per week year round.

August 23, 2014  NORTH GLEN HELEN ROAD, DEVORE (37 Species)

Weather: Fair; 60F to 85F; wind WSW  1 - 7 mph.

Time: 0640 - 0845 hrs.

Area Covered:  North Glen Helen Road, about one mile northwest of Glen Helen Regional Park at an elevation of about 2,000 to 2,100 ft: I walked trails in and around hillside chaparral (an east-facing slope of largely intact Ceonothus - Quercus spp. with some emergent burned stumps), ruderal and cleared fields, gardens, mature eucalyptus (blue gum) and pine (an exotic long-needled sp. and native Coulter pine) tree plantings, visually covering an area of about forty acres of developed and undeveloped land. Noise from passing freight trains and heavy freeway traffic (HWY 15 and 215) sometimes interferred with listening for bird vocalizations. The survey area was otherwise undisturbed by human activities during the early morning hours, becoming busier by the early afternoon. Most of the birdlife was found in and around the shady plantings of eucalyptus and pine trees surrounding a residential-resort area.
