Field Sketches
Shown here are some of my drawings (pencil) and paintings (watercolor and acrylic) done in the field during scouting trips and our Tropical Biology classes. I encourage students so inclined to include sketches, drawings and other artwork as a way to appreciate the wonderful diversity of life and splended scenery we encounter on these trips. Someone once said that if you really understand what you are looking at, you can sketch enough detail to show it. Your work may not win any art awards (Indeed, I was never at the top of drawing class in college!), yet the image you have created may provide insights into the subject matter, convey some meaning to others, and provide a delightful, memorable addition to your personal field notebook. And if you doubt your ability to produce quality art, consider the astonishing artwork of Doug Landis, a man without hands, shown at the bottom of this page.
